10 Reasons Why Road Trips Do Not Suck

As a kid, I dreaded road trips — mind you the only road trips we did were those from LA to Vegas. That’s how much I hated them. I just couldn’t stand not being able to stretch my legs out in the car for what seemed like 8 hours (more like 2 because we’d always make a stop somewhere in Barstow. Smh). The whole road-trips-suck mentality has stuck with me for the majority of my life until recently. A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I planned out a trip from Vegas to Colorado. I wasn’t really looking forward to the 10-12 hour drive, but as soon as we were out on the road — something changed.

It’s almost as if I had a spiritual awakening. Ideas and thoughts were rapidly flowing through my mind; I’d assume that’s how it feels to be Steve Jobs or any creative genius. My thoughts were so organized, I was able to think clearly. I usually only feel zen after a good yoga sesh, but apparently road trips have that affect on me as well. I don’t really know how to explain the experience, I just felt … well, alive.

The 12-hour drive no longer seemed unattainable, but more of an entertaining one with something to look forward to at every stop. We hadn’t really planned out much of the trip. Instead, we had a list of places we wanted wanted to visit and from there we just went with the flow. I much prefer it that way anyway, it’s fun and adventurous!

I’m not saying that everything will go well on road trips. Yes, there will be the occasional road kills, weather hazards, flat tires, getting lost in the middle of no where, and other little incidents that can occur (there are always ways to prepare for incidents and emergencies, so please make sure to do that ahead of time). Those are the things that make a trip more exciting — just like a book, movie, or even relationships, you need some climax. Sometimes you need unfortunate events to occur (or detours in this case), to fully appreciate the good things.

So here’s my attempt to hopefully sway you to take that road trip you’ve been wanting to.

10 Reasons Why Road Trips Do Not Suck:

1. You get instant gratification

Unlike airports, once you are on the road, your trip has begun! You don’t need to rush to check-in your luggage or worry about missing your flight.

2. It’s calming

There’s something about being on the road that calms me. I think it’s the fact that I’m often reminded of how small I am in this world. You don’t need to worry about sitting next to the arm rest hogger or cute but non-stop crying babies we’ve all encountered on the plane.

3. Forces you out of your comfort zone

One of the nights, we couldn’t find a hotel that met our budget so we parked at a rest stop and stayed the night there. You are going to have to get out of your comfort zone every once in a while, whether it be talking to a complete stranger or being completely naked in a nude hot spring. Well, you know what they say, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”.

4. Helps you to accept what is

Can’t always get what you want, especially when it’s against mother nature. She wins, sorry. So when things don’t go as planned, road trips do nothing but make you accept the situation you’re in.

5. The scenery

Yes, you can get amazing aerial views from the window seat of a plane, but what you will see up close and personal during road trips are the best. You get to see the world for what it really is — details and all. The great thing about it is, you can stop to take pictures whenever!

6. No need to rush

You are in complete control of your destination. You don’t need to check-in by a certain time and have the extra time to enjoy your lunch before going back.

7. Helps you save money

This is true most of the time. We all know that gas is really expensive and can hurt your wallet quickly. But with the proper planning and budgeting, you can definitely save a lot more. If you are pooling with friends, this brings the costs down for each of you.

8. No carry-on limitations

Yes little Bailey and Max can come too because there aren’t any pet fees for your furry loved ones on a road trip (some hotels do)! I am a girl (if you didn’t already know), and being one comes with a bag of non travel-size liquids we carry on during our trips. So yeah, road trips are awesome!

9. Finding the unexpected

Yelp, RoadTrippers App, TripAdvisor all provide amazing recommendations, but the best thing about road trips is finding the unexpected. It’s kind of like showing up to a surprise party on your birthday — just when you thought it couldn’t have gotten any better!

10. It brings people together

Nothing more intimate than a 10-hour car ride with your best friends or loved ones. You get to really have those deep conversations you’d normally shy away from on the plane. It brings people together and brings relationships closer.
