Get off the Vegas Strip: Valley of Fire

I can’t believe that I’ve been living in Vegas for about nine years now. Where does the time go?! But even though I’ve been here awhile, I still don’t feel like a true local. I just haven’t explored much of this city –I’m always looking to get out of it instead. So I want to change that. If I can’t appreciate exploring right where I am, how will I appreciate other cities?

Last week I decided to venture out to Valley of Fire, which surprisingly is only about 56 minutes from where I live. I’ve always heard about it, but never had the desire to check it out for myself. If you’re in the area and want to do something off the strip, I recommend taking a drive up there. The hike we did was the Fire Wave and also stopped by Arch and Elephant Rock. It was beautiful. Who knew Vegas had so much to offer.

Tips for your visit:

Best time to go
It would probably not be a good idea to go during the summer when it’s scorching hot –you are going to be in the desert. I recommend going in the morning or a few hours before sunset, most trails close off after sunset.

Hikes

Pretty much any hike is going to be breathtaking. I personally liked the Fire Wave. It was fairly easy and took about 30 minutes roundtrip, but allot an hour for pictures. The trail is located across parking lot #3. Arch and Elephant rock were more of photo attractions than a hike. Just park, walk a few steps, and snap away.

What to wear
Wear comfortable workout clothes, close-toed hiking or running shoes, and a hat (optional). Expect your shoes to fill up with sand.

What to bring
Water, camera, snacks (not totally necessary though), and whatever else you wish to bring.
