03 Apr What Does Travel Mean to You?
When we think of travel, we automatically fixate on the idea of going from one place to another. The word travel may bring visions of a nice cold drink on the beach while soaking in the sun, while others may see the endless lines of people stripping down for airport security. Everyone has their own idea of travel, and to me, there really isn’t a right or wrong answer.
I used to want to travel to escape the everyday life, thinking it’s the solution to all my problems. NOPE. Why spend all that money on travel expenses if you’re just going to use it as a temporary source of happiness that will fade upon return? I like to think of travel as an investment in myself. I travel for the experience –to awaken things in me, learn about the world, challenge myself, meet new people, make memories, and just living life how I’ve dreamed. It’s sad to say, but not too long ago I didn’t really know life outside the city (LA/Vegas). Farming was no more than just a fictional thing for me, driving was the only way of getting around, and I’ve been pretty spoiled with the weather in LA. If it weren’t for traveling, I wouldn’t have been able to dive off a cliff (mind you I’m terrified of heights), try food from a local farmer, meet some of the NICEST people, and up and quit my corporate job to follow a dream! I wouldn’t have ever thought of doing the latter, but here I am! One of the many things I love doing is taking pictures of the places I visit. I love printing my images and keeping them in a box to sift through every once in a while. These are the valuable things in life, for me. At the end of the day, I’m not just planning my next trip to cover up some pain or to fill a void. I’m adding to my collection of memories, expanding my knowledge of how things work, understanding why people act the way they do, learning that farmers do exist (lol), and that winters are legit! How else will I bore my future grandchildren to death without any travel stories to tell? Traveling helps me become a better person because it makes me happy. When I’m happy, I affect the people I love by sharing my happiness with them.
Traveling is a lifelong journey. Sure, I can google things online and yes the kind of soil I’ll see in Machu Picchu will probably be the same as the one in my backyard. But how much can you really learn by reading or watching something? I don’t know about you, but no matter how many videos or pictures I’ve seen on riding a bike, I still fell on my first attempt. It’s really about the experience and the things you’ll encounter –you’ll never know whether you like it unless you go out and live it. No matter how cliche it is, it still holds true that life is seriously too short to not live with adventure, knowledge, love, and enduring memories.
